What Is Organic SEO? What Organic SEO Services Include

Organic SEO is the work of ranking in Google without paying per click. Here is what it covers, what a proper service includes, and how to tell if it is working.

Organic SEO is the work of getting your website to rank in Google's unpaid results. No cost per click, no ad label. When someone searches, finds your page and clicks it without you paying Google anything, that's organic search.

The term gets used a lot by agencies, often to make a standard service sound special. This guide explains what organic SEO is, how it compares with the alternatives, what a proper organic SEO service includes, and how to tell if it's working.

Key takeaways

  • Organic SEO earns unpaid rankings. You pay for the work, not for each click.
  • It compounds: rankings keep bringing leads after the work is done, unlike ads.
  • A proper service covers technical SEO, content, authority and measurement.
  • Expect real movement in three to six months.
  • Judge it on position, traffic and leads, not on reports full of impressions.

Organic SEO in plain English

Google ranks pages by working out which result best answers a search. Its own How Search Works explainer describes the process: crawl the web, index what it finds, then rank results on meaning, relevance, quality, usability and context.

Organic SEO is everything you do to make your pages the best answer by those measures:

  • Technical: making sure Google can crawl, render and index your pages
  • Relevance: pages that target the right searches and answer them properly
  • Authority: links and mentions that show other sites trust you
  • Experience: fast, usable pages that people stay on

"Organic" separates it from paid search. Both appear on the same results page. One you pay for per click, the other you earn.

They work together. A plumber might run Google Ads for emergency call outs today while organic and local SEO build the rankings that eventually make the ad spend optional. The same foundations also win AI citations, which I cover in my generative engine optimisation guide.

Paid search is renting a billboard. Organic SEO is buying the building. Renting is faster. Owning gets cheaper every year.

Why organic SEO still matters

AI answers have taken a bite out of clicks on informational searches. Commercial searches, the ones that bring enquiries, still send people to websites. And organic traffic has one advantage nothing else matches: it compounds.

A service page that ranks this year still ranks next year, as long as it's maintained. Each new page and link adds to what's already working. Ads reset to zero the moment the budget stops.

That's why cost per lead from organic usually falls over time. In month one you're paying for work that hasn't ranked yet. By month eighteen you're paying a similar fee for leads from dozens of ranking pages.

What organic SEO services should include

A proper organic SEO service covers four areas. If a proposal skips one, ask why.

1. Technical SEO

  • Crawl and indexing audit, with fixes, not just a list of issues
  • Site speed and Core Web Vitals
  • Site structure and internal linking
  • Redirects, canonicals and duplicate content
  • Schema markup where it helps

Indexing problems usually come from canonicals, redirect chains or internal links, rarely from too little content. A good provider fixes those before writing anything.

2. Keyword strategy and content

  • Keyword research focused on searches that bring enquiries, not just volume
  • A page for every core service, built to rank and convert
  • Supporting content that answers buyers' questions
  • Updates to existing pages, which often beat writing new ones

3. Authority building

  • Relevant links from real sites in your industry or area
  • Digital PR and expert commentary where it fits
  • Brand mentions across the web
  • No bought link packages. Ever.

4. Measurement and reporting

  • Rank tracking for the terms that matter
  • Organic traffic and conversion tracking in GA4
  • Leads attributed to organic search
  • A monthly report that says what was done, what moved and what's next

My post on what a monthly SEO report should contain covers what to expect from that report, and what to be suspicious of.

What organic SEO costs

For UK small and mid sized businesses, monthly organic SEO usually costs between £500 and £2,000, depending on competition and how much content and link building is included. National campaigns cost more.

Be wary at both ends. Very cheap packages tend to be automated reports and directory submissions. Very expensive ones should come with a clear explanation of what the extra budget buys.

Most reputable providers ask for a minimum term. Mine is three months, because that's the shortest period in which organic work shows meaningful movement.

How long organic SEO takes

TimeframeWhat usually happens
Month 1Audit, technical fixes, keyword strategy, first page improvements
Months 2 to 3Impressions rise, long tail rankings appear, some pages reach page one
Months 4 to 6Core service pages climb, leads become consistent
6 to 12 monthsHarder terms move, leads compound

My own proof point started from nothing. After a Google manual action, I rebuilt a site on a new domain in a high competition agency niche with my own SEO strategy, and had it at position one for its core commercial term within six months. It now brings in close to 200 leads a month. The full story is in my penalty recovery case study.

How to choose an organic SEO company

  1. What will you do in the first 90 days? Specific answers beat "we'll optimise your site".
  2. How do you build links? If they won't tell you, assume it's something you wouldn't like.
  3. What do you report on? Rankings, organic traffic and leads should be the core.
  4. Who does the work? You want to know if it's outsourced.
  5. What happens if it doesn't work? A straight answer here says a lot.

Red flags: guaranteed number one rankings, reports built around impressions and visibility scores, long contracts with no break clause, and anyone who can't explain what they did last month in plain English.

Is organic SEO right for your business?

It's a strong fit if people search for what you sell, each customer is worth enough that a few extra leads a month matters, and you can commit to at least six months. It's a weaker fit if you need leads this week (run ads alongside) or your service is so new that nobody searches for it yet.

FAQs

What is organic SEO?

Organic SEO is the process of improving your website so it ranks in Google's unpaid search results. It covers technical fixes, content, links and measurement, and you pay for the work rather than for each click.

What's the difference between organic SEO and paid search?

Paid search shows your ad when you pay per click, and traffic stops when the budget stops. Organic SEO earns unpaid rankings that keep bringing traffic after the work is done, but takes months to build.

How much do organic SEO services cost in the UK?

Most small and mid sized businesses pay between £500 and £2,000 a month, depending on competition and scope. Very cheap packages are usually automated and rarely move rankings.

How long does organic SEO take to work?

Expect early movement in two to three months and consistent leads in four to six. Competitive terms can take a year or longer.

Is organic SEO still worth it with AI search?

Yes. AI tools draw their answers from pages that are indexed, well structured and trusted, which is what organic SEO produces. Commercial searches also still send people to websites to enquire.
