Generative engine optimisation

GEO is the work of being one of the sources a generative answer is built from, appearing inside the paragraph the assistant writes rather than ranking on a page of links.

The problem

Why this comes up

When somebody asks an assistant to recommend a supplier the answer names two or three businesses and mentions nobody else, which is a far harsher distribution than ten blue links, and most businesses have never checked whether they appear in it. The levers differ from classic ranking too, since generative answers lean on sources the model trusts for that topic, on facts that stay consistent across many places, and on text that can be lifted cleanly.

What you get

Named deliverables, not a promise to optimise something. Every one of these appears in the proposal with hours against it.

Get a scope for your site
  • The questions your buyers actually ask an assistant, asked and recorded verbatim
  • Which sources the answers currently draw on, and which of those you can realistically appear on
  • Content rewritten to answer the question in the first two sentences, before the context
  • Tracked re-asks on a schedule, so movement is visible rather than assumed

How it runs

1

Ask

Twenty to forty real buyer questions put to the main assistants and logged word for word, with sources.

2

Map

Which domains keep appearing as sources, usually trade press, directories, forums and a few competitors.

3

Earn

Getting you onto the sources that are winnable, some a content job, some digital PR, some a listing nobody claimed.

4

Re-ask

The same questions monthly, where movement is slow and uneven and you see all of it, including the flat months.

Questions

Ask these of anyone you are considering, not just me.

Ask something else
How is GEO different from AEO?

GEO is about being a source inside a generated paragraph, while AEO is about winning the direct answer slot in a conventional result, so they are related work with different targets.

Is it measurable?

Partially, since there is no Search Console for ChatGPT, though whether you are named against a fixed question set over time is a real signal even without a traffic number.

Is it worth paying for yet?

For most local trade businesses not as a standalone service, though it is worth doing inside proper SEO because most of it overlaps, and for considered B2B it already deserves its own attention.
